Of all the current industry trends—and they are many and varied—the adoption of strategies for so-called "big data" has been especially rapid and all-encompassing. Well, guess what? It's not big enough.
The challenge for today's enterprise is not only just big data, it's adopting a "total data" landscape. All data sources, from relational structured information to vast amounts of unstructured content, has to be integrated into a coherent, approachable, findable source that can propel your enterprise with the knowledge and wisdom of the amassed resources that you currently possess.
This means laying a foundation with consistent data models and business glossaries. You must encourage team collaboration by working together on understandable business terms and definitions. That makes it a management priority, because the skillsets that cover that ability cross many departmental and technical disciplines.
