You’ve captured your data requirements in your conceptual data model, now you need to check it with the business. Not everyone is a data modeller, so IPL’s Trevor Hodges and Nic Paul show you how to turn your model into natural language assertions that any stakeholder can understand.

Verifying your conceptual data models is an important step in model development. You can approach this in a number of complementary ways:

  • Compare with your process models – check that the nouns exist in your data model
  • Test with data – apply real examples to your model
  • Walk through the data model with the business

Walking through with the business will give you the greatest confidence that the model is correct – but not everyone is a data modeller, so what do you do?

IPL uses the technique advocated by Simsion and Witt* to present the data model as a list of plain language assertions. This presents the model in a form familiar to your subject matter experts, no training required! Using the power of ER/Studio Data Architect’s macro language, we generate these assertions automatically from the model, covering all the crucial aspects of the model:

  • Conceptual entities, subtypes and definitions
  • Relationships, cardinality and optionality
  • Attributes, primary keys and optionality

Join us on 15th July - See Embarcadero ER/Studio in action and learn how to improve your data model quality by creating natural language assertions!
